Everyone wants to achieve success.
Whether it’s personal success or business success (or preferably both), we all have goals we’re aiming for. Of course, I know that each of my clients have their eyes firmly set on business success – but the question is, how do we achieve it?
Well, it’s simple really.
Be. Do. Have.
When people ask me, “What’s the formula for success?”, that’s what I tell them.
Be. Do. Have.
In this blog, I’m going to go into detail about this formula for success, and show you how you can use it to achieve your business goals.
What is the Be. Do. Have. approach?
Be. Do. Have. is a simple formula that I use to drive business success. Not only do I use it as a framework for my own business to help meet my targets, but it’s also the approach that I teach and share with the many business leaders that I coach as well.
Here’s how it works:
BE x DO = HAVE
BE is the person that you need to be to get to your destination
DO is the work that you need to put in to get to that destination
HAVE is your destination
The key to reaching your HAVE (your end goal) is to clearly establish your BE (your identity) and your DO (your actions). In essence, you have to adapt your identity and the actions that you take to align with your destination.
Sounds simple enough, right? But you’d be surprised by the number of people – business leaders in particular – who struggle to make this formula work for them.
Here’s how most people view the road to achieving success
We all understand that knowing what we want is the best place to start (i.e.: What you want to HAVE). Whether we want our own home, double our business revenue, or grow our team, it’s in our human nature to set goals to achieve the things that we desire.
The problem for many people is, once they set their goal, they assume that by wanting more, this means that they have to do more (i.e.: DO and do and more do). They then put in hours of extra effort in a bid to achieve their targets and reach success.
While this may mean that they are heading in the right direction, this strategy doesn’t take into account the idea of leverage of choices around themselves (i.e.: the BE factor). These people who put in more work to have more are missing a crucial aspect of the success formula.
The key to this effective success formula
The main difference between the Be. Do. Have. formula and many other strategies for success is this: leverage.
This is why there’s a multiplication sign in the formula: BE x DO = HAVE
More often than not, those chasing success forget to work on the BE part of the formula – that being their identity. As this serves as a multiplier, it helps to speed up your journey towards success by encouraging you to be the version of yourself that best aligns with your objectives.
This is where you consider the following components:
- Your knowledge
- Your experience
- Your values
- Your habits
- Your beliefs
- Your people
Leverage is about tapping into your potential, realigning your values and beliefs and surrounding yourself with the right people. Once you make the right adjustments in these areas, you’ve adapted your identity to fit your goal – because achieving success is not just about doing, it’s also about being.

How can you work on BEing more?
When you do, you’ll ultimately do and have more!
Here’s my tip: make identity change a part of your 90-day plan.
It doesn’t have to be too drastic. You can start by coming up with a list of around five to ten “I am” statements that account for the person you need to be. This will set you up and allow you to meet the BE requirement of the formula.
These statements can be anything, so long as you keepz your goal in mind:
I am a great salesperson.
I am a capable leader.
I am a disciplined worker.
I am surrounding myself with the right people.
In doing so, you are tapping into your subconscious in order to be the person you need to be to achieve your goals. Your “I am” list will fulfil the BE factor of the formula, and subsequently allow you to focus on the DO factor, knowing exactly what you need to do to HAVE your end goal.
You can get started today
As it’s all so fresh in your mind, why don’t you take a piece of paper right now and simply write down your goals, along with your “I am” statements? Look at which ones already fit into the Be. Do. Have. formula, and which ones you need to re-imagine and re-shape to set yourself up for success.
After all, today is as good as any to be more, do more and have more!
